toshiba-r400-port.jpgThis computer belongs to the category of the hybrid portables being able according to needs’ to present themselves in a traditional form or to take the aspect of a shelf PC. For that, it is enough to open the screen, to turn over it and to fold up it on the keyboard. This last disappears and the seizure, navigation in the menus or the selection of elements are carried out by the means of a stylet. Let us note that this stylet is electromagnetic and not simply mechanical. It is impossible “to click” directly with the finger or an unspecified pen, which has at least the advantage of limiting the risks to damage or dirty the screen.

Of course, it will take a few minutes of training before being able to control the use of the stylet, especially when it is a question of accessing text. For this operation, a small window is accessible constantly and it is enough to write in a natural way so that the software of character recognition integrated into the specific version of Windows Vista makes the remainder. Another interest of the mode “shelf”, it authorizes the rocker between the modes portrait and landscape. One will be able to thus adapt posting to the type of use (portrait for navigation and landscape for an Excel table for example).

Once the arranged stylet, Portégé R400 is used like any portable. In spite of the reduced size of the keyboard, the keys are well arranged and one will not make more typing errors than with a “normal” product. One cannot on the other hand say as much the tactile flagstone of it. Of very small size, it does not make it possible to make evolve/move the pointerof mouse from one end to another of the screen without raising the hand.

Two screens for the price of one

If the screen of 12,1 inches is completely traditional, Portégé R400 is also characterized by the presence from a second screen on the part before case. Using Oled technology, this miniature bill-poster renders innumerable services. Whether the portable is extinguished or lit, it indicates information as various permanently as the hour, the level of battery or the presence of a possible Wi-Fi signal in the vicinity.

But this screen is especially the visible interface of a new function integrated into certain versions of Vista but still not very used: Microsoft Activates Notifications. This tool is related to the presence of a connection of the 3G type or 3G+ which makes it possible to receive emails, updates of diary or even of flows RSS even when the portable is extinct. A message is posted on the Oled screen with each new message, charges with you with deciding or not to light your portable for the lira. If this function MAN functions only with the 3G, there exists obviously in other ways of connecting this portable to Internet. But it should be noted that Portégé R400 does not propose a connection 802.11n, it will be necessary to be satisfied with the 802.11g.

Toshiba also proposed the sedentary aspect of its product. It has at the same time of a reader of fingerprint and a chip of encoding TPM (Trusted Platform Module) making it possible to make safe its data and its passwords. If connector industry is also rather complete (even if one regrets the absence of FireWire and the presence of a site PC Card rather than ExpressCard), the performances are, they, rather anecdotic. To face the needs for Vista,Toshiba set up 2 Go of memory but the processor Core Duo U2500 is worth more for its consumption of energy limited than for its power.

Even thing for the graphic circuit signed Intel which will satisfy to provide the vital minimum for the 2D. The battery is also a little right and autonomy will be limited to 2 h15. That remains correct all the same for such a product and being given its tariff, the asking price for one second battery appears negligible. What more precisely surprises if the price of this product is considered, it is thatToshiba proposes external engraver DVD only in option.
