With the Touch of the first name, HTC laid the foundation for a new generation of terminals. The small, rounded design and Touch FLO technology have allowed this equipment to be sold very well. But several gaps needed to be filled: too few buttons, a bit slower processor, limited memory and lack of compatibility 3G. HTC responded to these criticisms with the Dual Touch: Qualcomm processor at 400MHz, networks 3G/HSDPA, gargantuan memory (128MB RAM and 256MB of ROM), and especially a sliding keypad. Users accustomed to traditional phones or smartphones appreciate that argument, allowing for a smooth transition. The opening of the active keyboard defaults to a full menu to write an SMS, e-mail or seize personal information (calendar, contact…).

If the overall performance advantage of the powerful processor and especially of memory that seems almost unlimited autonomy disappoints:-mode 3G, it will require advanced users to recharge the battery daily, especially if the data connection is turned on permanently (via Mail Push for example). By limiting itself to the traditional GSM networks, autonomy is multiplied by two and a half, which boils down to the level of competition.

Despite Touch FLO, ergonomics touch will never reach the comfort of the iPhone

With the Dual Touch, HTC has extended its range FLO “Touch”. This technology, unique to the manufacturer, changes in depth the grip of Windows Mobile 6. So far the keyboard seemed indispensable for many manipulations, as the mere fact of wanting to scroll a page or contact list. To remedy this shortcoming, terminals often several hardware buttons, and even wheels. With Touch Technology “FLO” HTC takes the opposite this trend and offers a management “finger” of all applications. Of course the parallel with the iPhone is inevitable. The latter provides an interface originally thought for a pen without manipulation. Windows Mobile 6 is not in this configuration, and despite all the know-how third party developers can never completely changing its interface.

But the offer Dual Touch software goes in the right direction: photo album with finger manipulation (rotate, zoom, scroll), start menu wider and therefore more accessible, manager… improved contacts can be found the famous Cube, transitions 3 D impressive, and allowing access to multiple applications. The lack of customization, however, limit its interest. All third-party applications, or nearly so, also benefit from this technology: if an elevator scroll is present on a screen, simply slide your finger upwards to enable it, without necessarily seek exactly the edge of the screen .

All these small improvements make an excellent Dual Touch hybrid PDA / telephone, ergonomics and exemplary performance adapted. The general remains absent Wi-Fi, justified by the manufacturer via 3G, and by the audience, less technophile than for other devices.
