Age Of Pirates-Caribbean Tales - PC Games

After Sea Dogs, the Russian studio Akella proposes a title of the same kind to us, so much and so that one could think that it is its continuation. Age Of Pirates: Caribbean Tales is thus a role play in which you incarnate a sailor who seeks glory and fortune some share in the Caribbean of the XVIIème century. With the image of his elder, one is entitled to phases with foot, but also to broad passages where our ship is controlled.

ageofpirates1.jpgThe beginning of a part starts with the adjustment of some parameters (difficulty, frequency of the meetings…) and by the choice of your character. Not much of possibilities, since you will be able to play only with one man (Blaze) or a woman (Beatrice). The differences are purely aesthetic and the two characters are strictly identical on the plan of the gameplay. At the beginning of the adventure you have one boat and you will have as a principal objective to earn money for the upgrader. For that, it is possible for you to buy various equipment (veils, guns…). If you have enough money, you will be able to even change boat for a ship more adapted to your needs or, why not, buy the new ones to form a small flotilla. But for that, it is necessary that your points of tactic allow it.

ageofpirates2.jpgTo improve your competences of command, and thus to be able to increase the size of your fleet, it will be necessary to spend the experiment that you gain with the wire of the play by buying points of tactic. Of course, other choices are offered to you if you prefer to privilege another aspect that the number of boats: guns, precision, trade… In short, you can adapt your character to your way of playing. And it is besides there that the principal strong point of the play is which offers an appreciable liberty of action while making it possible to the player to choose his destiny. Several methods to make fortune exist: you can trade by buying food products in a port and by reselling them in another, to achieve missions for the account of one of the nations of the play (France, Spain, Netherlands…), to become a pirate while seizing enemy ships, by plundering trading vessels or as a conqueror of the whole colonies

ageofpirates3.gifAge Of Pirates: Caribbean Tales is thus a title with the multiple facets which we will try to peel for you. In fact, one can break up the play into two parts: the phase with foot and the phase of navigation. You walk in the various ports to foot with your misadventure and you can go in various places: the tavern to recruit officers, the store to buy food products, the shipyard to improve your boat and finally to go to see the governor to obtain a mission to achieve. As the chart of the play is divided into sixteen islands, you will be able to go one to the other by using your ship. It is besides on the latter that you will spend most clearly your time, because, in addition to the various storms of which you will have to try to leave you without too much damage by carrying out various operations (to return the veils, to maintain the course), you will have also to fight.

ageofpirates4.gifDuring a naval battle, your principal concern must be to correctly place your boat to be able to make fire on your adversary. As the guns are placed on both sides hull, it is necessary to do everything to be parallel to your target. To draw, two possibilities exist. Either you aim manually using the subjective sight and of the reticle which appears on the screen, or you put yourselves in sight at the third anybody and the targeting will be automatic, your chances to touch being then determined by your competence “precision”. The point of organ of a combat between two ships is the destruction or the rendering of the one of both. But you can also try a boarding while launching your hooks. You will climb then on board unfavourable boat and will take part in a combat with the body-with-body with the image of a play of action. The battles cannot alas make clash more than 30 men (15 against 15). Thus, if your ship counts 150 members of crew and that the adversary has 100 for its part of them, the battle will be simple 15 against 10. At the end of a victorious combat, you will be able to seize the unfavourable ship or to plunder it. It is a very effective means to be made money.

ageofpirates5.gif Another means to very quickly become rich, it is to seize a colony. Obviously, it is not so easy that that because each one of between they is defended by a fort. Two stages are essential to put the hand on one of these forts. Since the sea first of all, it will be necessary for you with your (or your) boat (X) to destroy all the guns of the fort. Then, you will be able to unload with ground. At this point in time you will have to carry out the attack counters the garrison of the fort by killing all the guards which will be put across your road. Once it will be done, you will be able either to plunder the colony, or to shave it to seize all his fortune, or to conquer by naming it one of your officers at his head as a governor. You will be able to then build various structures like the hutments to increase moral your soldiers. But that remains enough limited and one remains far from the possibilities offered by a city builder. The management of colonies thus remains a very secondary element which it is necessary to see like a small no-claims bonus and not like an end in itself.

But it is not most awkward, because in my opinion, which will reject a number of players, it is the catch in rather delicate hand of the title. Forget the orders by defects, they are completely unsuited. You will have to make a turn in the options to regulate all that with your own way, and still, it is not certain which arrive to you there because the play takes a malicious pleasure to refuse to take into account certain keys like those of the directional paving stone for example. Let us pass on this detail and tackle the principal problem of the title: its repetitive aspect. Indeed, the battles are followed and resemble each other, and especially, the missions which the governors entrust to you are too much repetitive. One spends his time escorting such or such convoy of a point A at a point B, to drive out such or such enemy of the nation, in short, at the end of a few hours, there is extremely to bet so that you weary yourselves play. Last reproach to be made: the chart is made up only of 16 islands, which is all the same very little.

ageofpirates7.gifOn the level of the multijouor, it is not less than 16 players who can clash in four modes of play: deathmatch, team, escort and attack forts. We could not test these various modes for lack of adversaries. For the moment, there is indeed absolutely nobody who exploits the Net for this reason. Moreover, there is no skirmish mode to only play against the IA. Too bad. With final, Age Of Pirates: Caribbean Tales will not have left us an imperishable memory. Admittedly, the concept was sympathetic nerve, but the failing jouability associated a repetitive side and limited contents (16 islands only, not of skirmish) does not make it possible under Akella to frankly be essential
